   Note it is good idea to remove the automatic printer installation feature of CUPS.
   sudo systemctl stop cups-browsed sudo systemctl disable cups-browsed
   
   The distribution hplib has to be removed and the HP version installed to allow error free scanning from network devices like HP Laserjet Scanners and Mutli Function Printers.

   Install on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS:
   apt install libcanberra-gtk-module libcanberra-gtk3-module apt install python-is-python3 # requires python3 cd ~/Downloads mkdir tmp;cd tmp # the hp utility unpacks many files in local directory wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.21.12/hplip-3.21.12.run/download?use_mirror=nchc ./hplip-3.21.12.run

   The hplib procedure is extensive and installs many packages and compiles some procedures. After it completes run hp-setup.

   hp-setup

   Select the Advanced Options and insert the IP address of the printer.

   

   Finally, run hp-plugin to install the driver. Select the option to download a fresh copy form the HP server.

   scanimage -b --batch-scan=yes > output.pnm
   
   In XSane, use the provided batch scan mode.
